2.
Raymond McClain Wood was born on 28 May 1886.
He was farmer. He lived in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois.
He died on 22 Aug 1972.1
We show the death date as 22 Aug 1972 but Sandra Nees shows 23 Aug 1972. He
was buried in Robinson Creek, Shelby County, Illinois.1 At the time of Phyllis's birth, Raymond worked at the
Masonic Home in Sullivan, IL. There was a big flu epidemic that killed a large
number of people. They moved to Shelbyville area. About 3 miles north of "Dugout",
a dug out place by the Kaskaskia river. The area is now under Shelbyville lake.
Ray worked very hard and had a very hard time but he never complained or wanted
pity. He was a farmer, talked very loud and gruff, but in his heart he was as
gentle as anyone can be.
Raymond McClain Wood and Goldie Harlow were married on 6 Dec 1910.
According to Phyllis Wood Strohl, the family moved to Dugout, Shelby County,
IL sometime after her birth in 1917. Dugout (not a town) was located behind
the Sheblyville city park. It is now under Lake Shelbyville. 3.
Goldie Harlow1
was born on 8 May 1894.1,2 Sandra Nees shows a birth date of 27 Aug 1894. We had
shown 8 May 1894. She died on 22 Aug 1945.1,2 Sandra Nees shows the death date
as 15 Sep 1945. We show the death date as 22 Aug 1945. Family history has always
stated that Goldie died while her daughter Violet was in the hospital with the
delivery of James Dennis Reichart on 5 Sep 1945 and Violet did not learn of the
death for 2 weeks. She was buried in Robinson Creek, Shelby County, Illinois.1 She died from complications of
hysterectomy.3 Goldie was
not raised by her parents, because we think her mother died very young and her
father was unable to raise her. We think the family was very large.
Two different accounts exist in the family legends. One belief is that she was
raised by her aunt in Newton, IL. The other belief is that she was raised by
her aunt in TN and they moved to IL by covered wagon.
We believe Goldie was raised by Ruel (Harlow?).
Goldie also died very young. She went into the hospital to have surgery at the
same time her daughter Violet went in to have her first child, James Dennis.
Violet had to have a Ceasarian and was not doing well when her mother died of
complications of her surgery. Violet did not know her mother had died until 2
weeks after her death.
We believe Goldie worked at the Masonic Home in Sullivan. Phyllis Wood Strohl
reports remembering an influenza epidemic that killed many residents of the Home.
Sandra Nees shows her name as Goldie Vadiken. Children were:
