Tombstone shows James "Mustered out July 11, 1865".
He died on 29 Jul 1922 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois.2,3,4,12 He was buried
in Brunswick Cemetery (Antioch), Ridge Township, Shelby County, Illinois.2,3,4 According to Bert Reichart's tales
to Terisa Reichart Heinzmann, we believe James's family came from the Pennsylvania
Dutch. Their last name was probably spelled Reichardt. The 1920 census lists
both James' parents as being born in Pennsylvania.
For years we have had James' middle name as William but this appears to have
been an error. We have two sources showing James middle initial should be K,
Waneta Reichart Wood Sparks and a hand copied article from the Shelbyville Democrat.
Also, both Carolyn King and the 1880 census do not list any middle name or initial.

The following is an obiturary from an unknown paper:
BURNS ARE FATAL TO
ARTHUR REICHART
Arthur Reichart, a farmer of near Westervelt died at the Shelby County Memorial
hospital Monday morning at 10:40 o'clock from burns which he received while building
a fire at his home with the aid of coal oil.
The deceased had started the fire in his heating stove, but was not satisfied
with the way it was burning, and picked up a can of coal oil and poured it on
the bed of coals, which immediately exploded, throwing oil over his clothing,
which caught fire. He ran into the yard with his clothing in flames, and was
attempting to re-enter the house to save some of the household goods when his
wife interfered.
Mrs. Reichart jumped from an upstairs window with their four children to safety.
The house was in names and no help could be summoned by telephone. Mr. and
Mrs. Reichart went to the home of Otto Sands where they summoned aid. A doctor
was called and Mr. Reichart was rushed to the hospital, where he died, several
hours later.
Otto Sands was not at home at the time and it was some time before help could
reach the stricken family.
Arthur Reichart was born in Brunswick, April 18th, forty-one years ago, a
son of the late James and Elizabeth Reichart.
Besides, his wife and children, Mr. Reichart is survived by the following
brothers and sisters: Bert Reichart of Brunswick, William Reichart of Nokomis,
Mrs. Attie Rodman and Mrs. Edith McDonald of near Westervelt, Mrs. Emma Henry
and Mrs. Bertha McDonald of Shelbyville, and Mrs. Lillian Lee of DeRider, Louisiana,
two sisters having preceded him In death.
He was united in marriage to Lesta Sands in 1907 and to this union four children
were born, two dying in infancy, and two still living, Juanita Maude and Audrey,
two and three years old respectively. Two girls, Grace and Frances were adopted
when they were small.
Coroner Lafe Tallman conducted an inquest, the verdict of the jury being that
death resulted from shock following accidental burning.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church In Westervelt, Tuesday
afternoon at two o'clock, with Rev. O. P. Wright in charge. Music was furnished
by the church choir.
The flowers were in charge of five nieces of the deceased, Emma Howard, Elsie
and Odell Lappin, Sadie Rodman and Fern McDonald.
Pall bearers were Harley Lockart, Elgin Barrett, M. L. Jackson, Grover Taylor,
Loy Marlin and Otto Christman. Interment was in Antioch cemetery.
He was buried in Brunswick Cemetery (Antioch), Ridge Township, Shelby County,
Illinois.2,3 He was also known as Art. He died from burns.3,20
The burns were received when he threw kerosene on live coals in heating stove
causing explosion and catching his clothes on fire. Art died in a fire. Art
was an outdoors man. He and Bert were very close. They hunted, trapped, chopped
wood, butchered hogs, and fished together. They were both carpenters. His death
really took some of the spirit from Bert. | 2 | x. | Bert Bland Reichart. |
