Sixth Generation


32. John B Johnson6 was born in 1788 in Christian County, Kentucky. He lived in Clinton County, Illinois in 1818.6 He died in 1833 in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. He came into Sugar Creek Township in 1817. May 23 of that year he entered the south-east quarter of section 21. The following year, he moved his family to this tract from New Madrid County, Missouri. He went to that county a young man with his father, Hugh Johnson, where he afterwards married. He lived in the place he improved in section 21 until his death in 1833. He lift a widow and 10 children, only two of whom were living in 1881: Captain A. H. Johnson, who in 1881 lived a mile and a half north-east of Trenton, who was one of the prominent citizens of Clinton County; and Eliza McDonald, who lived in Trenton in 1881.

John Johnson, filled the office of Justice of the Peace here for a number of years. From 1820 to 1835, there was a great deal of cotton raised in Clinton County. In 1823 Johnson built a cotton-gin and ran it for several years. The settlers for 20 miles around would come to this gin. Johnson took cotton for toll--every eighth pound. This he would bale and send to St. Louis where it found ready market.

HM&CCI mentions a brother William Johnson who moved to Clintion County in 1817 and lived west of Sugar Creek for over a half a century, and a cousin William Johnson, Sr. who lived in Sugar Creek Township until he moved to Hancock County, Illinois in 1845.

The Johnson settlement was established in the western part of Clinton County by John Johnson, the two William Johnsons, Daniel Simons, ______ Poweres, and ______ McDonald. This settlement was close to what was afterwards known as the Old Sharon Camp ground, south of the present town of Trenton.

D. M. Johnson moved to Clinton County from Christian County in 1817 and could be a relative.
John B Johnson and Margaret Powers were married in Missouri.6

33. Margaret Powers6 was born in Wayne County, Missouri. Children were:
