160 acres, as shown in 1860 and 1870. In 1874 and 1881, he is shown as owning
NW/4 NW/4 Sec 10 T2S-R7W, New Athens Township, 40 acres. Their house, as seen
on an old tintype, was a story-and-a-half white brick, federal style, very similar
to the house of Maud Underwood in Belleville in the 1960s. Presumably, this
house was at the Smithton location. Is it still there? He owned NW/4 NW/4 Sec
10 T2S-R7W between 1874 and 1881 in New Athens Township, St. Clair County, Illinois.39 He died in 1885 in Saint Clair
